EFPL season 2009-10
NewsIts nearly that time again!!!

The new pool season starts on Wednesday 2nd September.

We have 15 teams contesting the league again this year. We welcome back the West End Bar to the league, we also have a completely new venue in the Otters Head after the Clansman A team of last year re-located there. We also have two teams playing at the Woodside Inn now after the Ring o Stanes lads switched venues.

The first weeks fixtures give new defending champions, the Clansman, a home tie against the Dixon Arms A. Last years runners up, the Dixon Arms, also play at home against Mo's Jahangiir. The Otters Head host there first ever league match when they take on the guys from the Miners Welfare. The Woodside Inn, fresh from their victories in both the summer league and cup campains, welcome the new boys from the West End Bar. The guys from the Station Hotel have a short walk over to the Prinlaws with the Station Hotel A playing at home against the Woodside Inn A. Styx Pool Bar play host to the Burns Tavern boys, Styx Pool Bar A have an extra week off as it is their 'free week'.

IM 1 - Paisley 15/16th March
Tournament NewsWell the weekend past meant it was the EOF's first foray into the IM finals and it was a mixed bag. Of the three who qualified, two were drawn against Scotland A players and the other against a Scotland B player so it was never going to be easy.

Unfortunately on the day, Tuc (A Rougvie) could not manage and forfeited his tie. Kev MacLeod (Bagpuss and me) was first on at 1.45 and after eventually finding the venue was a little shocked at the layout. Five tables crammed together in a fairly small lounge and one in the bar. Only 6 tables for 128 people meant it was going to be a long day if successful and an even longer weekend if very succesful!

With the tournament running late i started at about 2.30 against Campbell Crawford a Scotland B player from Monklands. After losing the first i rattled off the next five with a combination of good play and dreadful finishing on my opponents behalf only to then hit the skids, rattle a pretty easy black for a 6-3 win and be pegged back to 5-5. I held my nerve and after a dry break from Campbell i cleared to win 6-5.

Andy Norrie was on soon after against Mark Armstrong a Scotland Internationalist from Edinburgh. Watching the game, Andy could easily have been 3-0 up only to find himself 3-0 down! He hardly put a foot wrong (forgetting the rattled black at 0-1) which shows the standard of play. Andy played pretty good throughout and eventually lost 6-3. He only has himself to blame though as he helped make the draw and pulled out his opponent!

I was due back on at 8.45 so sat back and watched some cracking games including the no. 1 ranked player Jayson Shaw losing in the first round to Sean Donnachie (who was playing on his local table) and also near fistycuffs at the poker table in the corner. I suppose it would not be the same having a night out in Paisley without a bit of argy bargy!

Eventually i started my second game after 10 struggling to keep my eyes open as my contacts were nearing the end of their life. I missed out on a tie against the young Woodside wizz kids old man as Mikey Duncan beat him 6-5 in the first round therefore my second tie was against another player playing in his first IM event. I should have lost the first rack with my opponent missing and rattling the black but dug in to sneak it. From there on i was pretty good wrapping up the tie 6-0 in less than half an hour and was fortunately home before i turned into a pumpkin at 12.

Back through for 1pm on the Sunday, i heard that some boys were playing up till 3 the previous night. Again the event was running late and it was closer to 2 before i got on. It was not ideal as i had not hit a ball since the previous night and it showed. On form i would have been 3-0 up but instead found myself 4-0 down against Steven Bennie from Braes, currently about 20th in the rankings. I regained some respectability with a couple of cracking finishes to run out a 6-3 loser, earning myself 30 quid which covers my 25 quid entry for all five events and moving me up to about 444th in the rankings!!!

Gripes for the weekend would be the lack of tables, room around the tables, late night on the Sat and the horrendous roll that saw the white run into the corner bag in my last 32 tie after starting about 3 inches off the bag to go 5-2 down.

Still good experience and can't wait for the next one at Hustlers in Rosyth (where they have 10 tables) if i manage to qualify!!!

Pettycur Bay
Tournament NewsIt was the usual hard luck story at Pettycur for the East of Fife squad at this years event. After two poor performances in the opening games losing both 7-4 to Arbroath and Motherwell A, the team rose early on the Sunday morning knowing only a good win coupled with a resounding victory by either Arbroath or Motherwell in their tie would secure passage through to the round robin phase. Motherwell obliged by winning 8-3 and although the EoF squad did manage to beat the might of Monklands by 6 frames to 5, the squad were knocked out on frames won, missing out by two frames.

It was another hard knock in the East of Fife's up and down experience of competition play. Lessons have been learned, none more so in relation to squad selection. This year the team was chopped and changed right up until the day before the tournament commenced and this proved very unsettling. In future years, the team will be selected well in advance of competitions with any monies also paid in advance to discourage players pulling out. This will bring the EoF in line with the other teams entering such tournaments.

One encouraging point was the squads performance in the singles event with a number of players progressing through the early stages in what is a very competitive event. Special note to K MacLeod, who for the second time in three years reached the prize stage of the event and also was the only member of the team to maintain a 100% win record in the group stage! LOL

Super 11's, Pettycur Bay
This weekend, East of Fife will again participate in the SPA super 11's tournament at Pettycur Bay. Looking to follow on from the success of last year (last 8 spot only to be beaten by eventual winners Braes 6-4) the EOF team have been drawn in what has been considered the 'group of death' with Monklands, Motherwell A and Arbroath. No-one considers the East of Fife team to be even a realistic challenger to emerge from the group unless you are of course part of the EOF team. Given there are 3 qualifiers, this underlines the difficulty in the task ahead.

This year the team was picked from players playing in the Glenrothes 8 Ball League held at Styx and played almost every second Sunday. The top 8 qualifiers gained automatic qualification. Those being:

Jamie Simpson
Alan Saunders
Kevin MacLeod
Steve Grant
Andy Norrie
Alan Rougvie
Jim Murray
Paul Wilson (Replacing George Eaves who is unavailable for selection)

With the final 3 places earned through a play off system and wildcard picks going to:

Mike Shepherd
Mike Murdoch
Grant Currie

The team had intended taking 12 men however Derek Stark is a late cancellation through work commitments.

The selection process for future events will be amended and brought into line with the top counties where a selection committee simply pick who they believe to be their strongest team.

As the squad is a league team, this is by no means a closed shop. If anyone is interested in taking part in events such as the super 11's and 15's then they would be strongly advised to become part of the Glenrothes 8 Ball league where they can perform against some of the best players in our league.

The new league will commence after the summer and any details will be posted nearer the time.

In the meantime we wish the East of Fife team well this coming weekend.

Individual Membership
Tournament NewsS.P.A. Individual Membership

For those of you who are not aware, the EOF pool league affiliates to the SPA (Scottish Pool Association) which entitles the EOF league to take part in SPA tournaments held throughout Scotland. For a number of years the league has sent teams to both the Super 11’s and Super 15’s and this year also held a qualifier and sent participants to a singles tournament in Falkirk. It is the league’s intention to broaden our participation in other SPA events and in particular the individual membership.

As background information to the Individual Membership, the tournament is approx 10 years old with membership continually growing since inception. The tournament is a series of events (5 per year) held at various locations throughout Scotland with 128 competitors competing at each event. These 128 competitors are qualifiers through various routes (top 16 players from previous season) but namely entry is gained through local qualifiers. Each league is assigned a number of places per tournament, pro rata depending on the number of overall entries. As a ball park figure 24 entries may give the EOF league four places per event. This year 16 people have entered giving us three places at each final.

The cost per individual per year is 25 pound or 5 pound per event. This must be paid up front and in full for all events. This entitles entry into all five qualifiers for the five events. The qualifiers will be straight knockout, with no seeding in our first year and are carried out centrally by the SPA with each game best of 11. In subsequent years, seeded players will be those who have gained most ranking points in the previous season and they will gain a bye through any preliminary ties. Number of seeds will depend on number of places gained at each finals, i.e. 4 places means 4 seeds.

The dates for each IM event for 2008 are 15/16th March, 12/13th April, 21/22nd June, 6/7th Sept and 13/14th December, therefore qualifiers will be held prior to each of these dates for each event. Qulifier for IM 1 is to be held at Styx, Glenrothes (as will all the qualifiers), on the 17th February.

Each qualifying draw will be a timed event. The way each draw for this year has been carried out is to separate the 16 players into 3 sections of 6, 5 and 5. This means that one tie from the section with 6 will commence at 11am, then each subsequent match 1.5 hours later, unless both players are present and a previous match has finished early. Turning up late for a tie will result in one frame lost every five mins.

At present the first four qualifiers have been drawn, with the 5th draw held back as many players are omitted from this tournament. These are generally, internationalists, the top 16 seeds and any other player the IM committee see fit to omit. This is intended to give the more inexperienced and younger players an opportunity to shine on a national level. In our first year it is highly unlikely that anyone form the East of Fife will be omitted.

Thanks
